Reduce
The best way you can help manage your nonbiodegradable wastes is by reducing the amount of waste you produce. Here are some ways by which you can do this:
- Use whatever things you have to the maximum. For example, even if you have used your pencil for a long time and it is already half its original length, continue to use it as long as it is still writing well. Do not ask your parents to buy you a new one. Observe this practice with all your school supplies and other things. In this way, you cut down not only on the things that you have but also on your expenses.
- If you must buy new things that you really need, get those products that are proven to be durable. In this way, you use the products for a longer time. For instance, in buying pencils, remember that wooden pencils last longer than those that are made of plastic. You also reduce the trash because wooden materials decompose while plastic does not do so.
- Avoid products that use a lot of packaging. Products that are wrapped in many layers of paper and plastic consume a lot of materials and therefore increase trash.
- Have broken things repaired instead of throwing them right away. Toys that have been broken or damaged can be repaired. You can then play with them again instead of asking for new ones.
- Take good care of your things so they will last longer and will keep you from having to buy replacements.
