Disposing of Biodegradable Materials
Here are the simple steps to follow in making home compost:
- Choose a large container that you will use to hold the compost. This can be a large tin or plastic bin. Place it in an area of your backyard or the back part of your home where it is out of people’s way.
- If you have enough space in your backyard, you can allot an area in which to make your compost pile and mark this with a simple fence.
- Into the bin or compost pile throw household wastes, along with leaves and grass clippings.
- Note that household wastes that are best for composting are bits of paper, bread, coffee grounds, egg shells, fruit peels, grains, nut shells, and vegetables. Do not include dairy products, glossy paper, meats, plants on which pesticides have been sprayed, oily products, and wastes from pets because these will affect the quality of the compost. If it is possible, alternate placing dry and wet materials into the bin or pile. For example, after a layer of wet vegetable peels, throw in paper or dry leaves. In this way, you keep oxygen balanced inside the bin or pile.
