Kinds of Simple Machines
Wheel and Axle
A wheel and axle is a wheel with a rod called an axle. It is a kind of lever that can move in a circle. It helps move objects across distances. The wheel is the round end that turns the axle, the cylindrical post. The turning of the wheel and axle causes movement. Other examples of wheels and axles are doorknobs, egg beaters, pencil sharpeners, meat grinders, and steering wheels.
Inclined Plane
An inclined plane is a flat and slanting surface which connects a lower level to a higher level. It is a simple machine that allows an object to be moved vertically without being lifted. The smooth wooden board is a plane. It is inclined or slanted to help you move objects from a higher place to a lower place.
A ramp is a common example of an inclined plane. Objects such as heavy boxes are slid down to the ground using a ramp. This is commonly seen when a truck unloads heavy things like furniture and appliances. Most buildings are also required to provide ramps for disabled persons using wheelchairs. The ramps enable people to exert less force and effort in moving up to higher floors or sections of the building.
