Blood Types

Blood Type AB

People with blood type AB have both A and B molecules on the surface of their RBCs. They are called universal recipients because they can receive any type of blood. However, blood type AB can be donated to a person with blood type AB only.

Blood Type O

People with blood type O have neither A nor B molecules on the surface of their RBCs. They are called universal donors. Their blood can be transfused to a person with any blood type.

Significance of Blood Type

Blood types are already established before birth. Each individual has his or her parent's blood type. Blood typing is done to determine the relation of a person to another. It detects the presence of a certain disease in a person. It is also used for identification and verification purposes, especially if a person is involved in a particular crime.
