Earth’s Landforms

Kinds of Landforms

Volcanoes

A volcano is a mountain with a crater, or an opening through which it releases lava, ashes, and hot gases. It releases these materials only when it erupts. Mayon Volcano in Albay is known for its near perfect cone. Another well-known volcano in the Philippines is the Taal Volcano in Batangas. It is known as the world’s smallest active volcano.

Many plants thrive well in the soil near a volcano. Towns near Mayon Volcano, for instance, grow abaca, coconut, as well as rice and vegetables. These plants grow well in the area because of the rich and fertile soil at the foot of the volcano. Animals commonly raised in similar areas include carabaos, cows, pigs, and poultry.

Hills

A hill is smaller than a mountain. Examples of this are the famous Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Manduyog Hill in Aklan, Gines Hill in Iloilo, and Makahambus Hill in Cagayan de Oro City.

Hills are more accessible than mountains and volcanoes, thus they are great places in which to raise plants and animals. In their flat areas, the land is cultivated with coconut and similar crops. Carabaos, cows, chickens, and butterflies are among the animals found in these areas.
