Experiments and Sample Spaces

Tables

Another way of obtaining all the elements of the sample space for an experiment is to put up a table. It is useful for experiments with only two operations.

Example

Determine the elements of the sample space for tossing two dice using a table.

Solution

The table below shows all the possible outcomes in tossing two dice. The rows represent the possible outcomes for the first operation; that is, tossing the first die. The columns represent the possible outcomes for the second operation, which is tossing the second die.
