Operations on Events

There are operations on events of a given sample space that will result in the formation of new events. These are the intersection and union of events. These new events are also events of the given sample space.

Definition
Consider two events A and B. The intersection of events A and B is the set containing all the elements that are in both A and B. The intersection of A and B is denoted by AB.

Example 1

Consider the experiment of tossing a die. Let A be the event of obtaining a number less than 5 and B, the event of obtaining an even number. Determine AB.

Solution
Based on the given information, A={1,2,3,4} and B={2,4,6}. Thus, AB={2,4}.
