Effects of Earthquakes
The table below shows a modified Mercalli scale. Notice how the intensity of an earthquake corresponds to its effects.

|---|---|
| 1 | Slight shocks are felt by experienced observers. |
| 2 | Extremely feeble shocks are felt by few persons at rest. |
| 3 | Very feeble shocks are felt by several persons at rest. |
| 4 | Feeble shocks are felt by people both indoors and outdoors; movable objects swing; doors and windows are moved out. |
| 5 | Shocks of moderate intensity are felt generally by everyone; pieces of furniture are moved out of place; some bells may ring. |
| 6 | Fairly strong shocks can awaken those asleep; hanging objects move in circle; trees and shrubs sway; unstable objects may overturn. |
| 7 | Strong shocks are felt; movable objects fall; parked vehicles move. |
| 8 | Very strong shocks are felt; heavy pieces of furniture move and topple down; the walls of buildings crack; weak houses are damaged. |
| 9 | Extremely strong shocks are felt; destruction of some buildings occurs; landslides are observed; electric posts and monuments tilt. |
| 10 | Shocks of extreme intensity are felt; a great disaster occurs as the rock layers are ruined; rocks fall from mountains; railroad tracks bend. |
