No matter the expertise of meteorologists and the developments in weather instruments, one thing remains certain: weather will always be unpredictable. You may find yourself sweating intensely from the morning sunshine then find yourself soaked during a downpour later in the afternoon.
Unlike meteorologists, you may not be able to anticipate the drastic changes in the weather, but you can learn to keep yourself safe during different weather conditions. Here are some safety precautions to remember:
- Develop the habit of listening to weather forecasts on the radio or watching them on television news programs. In this way, depending on weather conditions, you know which activities or tasks are safe to do and which can be put off for another day. For instance, you can determine that it would not be safe to go on a picnic when forecasts predict heavy rains during the day.
- Dress according to the weather. Do not wear thick and dark-colored clothing during hot days as this can cause you to perspire heavily and be uncomfortable. Dark colors absorb heat and wearing them on hot days can add to your discomfort. If you have to step out during rainy days, wear clothes that will give more protection from the rains. Hooded jackets or sweaters that are worn over your regular clothes can be taken off when they get wet.
- Always bring protective gear such as caps, raincoats, and umbrellas to keep yourself from getting soaked during a sudden downpour.
- Avoid staying out and under the heat of the sun from ten o’clock in the morning to around four o’clock in the afternoon, as these are the hours of the day when the sun’s heat is most harmful.
- Do not play outdoors during heavy rains. Aside from getting very wet, you may slip or slide on the wet ground and other surfaces and hurt yourself. It is best to stay indoors during bad weather.
