- If you are outdoors and you hear the sound of thunder, get indoors as soon as you can. The sound of thunder follows lightning and being in the path of a lightning bolt can be fatal. Thunder also heralds rain. If you are unable to get indoors, stay away from anything tall such as trees and lampposts, crouch down on your knees, and cover your head and ears with your arms.
- Avoid flooded areas. After several days of heavy rains, some streets may be flooded. If you are out on such a day, avoid flooded areas. As much as possible, get to a safe place and stay out of the rains till the water subsides.
- Never try to walk on flooded streets especially without a trusted adult. You may not only fall into open manholes or similar parts of the road, you also run the risk of contracting leptospirosis, an infectious disease that is transmitted through the urine of infected animals such as rats. Flood waters can carry the virus that causes the infection.
