Protecting Water Forms
Water is a very important natural resource. Did you know that about 60 percent of your body is made up of water? Just the lungs and brain, two major parts of your body, are made up mainly of water. Your blood is also almost 80 percent water. Water helps to dissolve the vitamins and minerals in the food you eat. It also brings the food to different parts of your body. Furthermore, it helps remove the wastes from your body.
With these important uses of water in the human body alone, you can already see how valuable it is. Each person has to drink from six to eight glasses of water every day. Without enough water in your body, you would feel thirsty, uncomfortable, and weak at first. People who do not drink water for several days can die from dehydration, or the loss of water from the body.
Knowing the importance of water should encourage you to do your part to protect water forms from being polluted or destroyed.
The following are some simple ways you can observe:
- Turn off water faucets that are not in use to avoid wasting water. For example, do not let the water from the faucet run while you brush or rinse your teeth. Instead, put the water that you will use for rinsing in a cup or glass.
- Inform your parents or other adult relatives about leaking water pipes or dripping faucets in your home. These must be repaired immediately.
- Instead of using water from a shower when bathing, use water in a pail. Studies show that showering uses up more water.
- Never play with water except while swimming. Playing with toys such as water pistols lets you waste a lot of water.
- Do not throw trash into bodies of water. Dispose of your trash properly.
- Refrain from washing laundry in rivers, brooks, streams, and other water forms. The soap you use pollutes the water and this can kill the fish and plants that live in these water forms.
