Position of Adverbs

  1. Frequency

    Adverbs of place tell how often or how frequently something happens. These are placed before a main verb, after the be verb, and between the auxiliary and the main verb.

    Examples:

    1. The cabuliwallah frequently visited Mini.
    2. Mini was always pleased to see the cabuliwallah.
    3. The cabuliwallah would sometimes bring nuts to Mini.
  2. Degree or quantity

    Adverbs of degree or quantity point out the intensity or degree of an action word (verb) or a modifying word (adjective or another adverb). These are regularly found before the adjective or adverb being modified and before the main verb, between the linking verb and the adjective, and between the auxiliary and the main verb.

    Examples:

    1. The king was absolutely happy when the princess recovered from her illness.
    2. Sita fought very hard to resist Ravana.
    3. Mini’s mother was somewhat afraid by her daughter’s friendship with the cabuliwallah.
    4. In contrast, Mini’s father was decidedly amused by their friendship.
  3. Adverbs of affirmation and negation

    Adverbs of affirmation are used to validate and emphasize the truth of what is being said.

    Examples:

    1. Bharata undoubtedly agrees to Rama’s kingship.
    2. Amid all the challenges, Rama definitely stays true to his words and to his dharma.
    3. Sita certainly trusts Rama’s loyalty to her.

    Adverbs of negation are generally used to answer questions that are denied as true.

    Examples:

    1. The three brothers never gave up in looking for unusual gifts.
    2. They wasted no time in saving the princess.
    3. No, the two older brothers were not chosen by the princess.
