Sequence of Adjectives

When used in a series, adjectives follow a specific order in sentences. Here is the sequence of adjectives used in a sentence:

Determiner
Opinion
Size
Shape
Age
Color
Origin/Nationality
Material
Noun
many amazing tiny angular antique natural Burmese wooden carvings
an inspiring classical Indian music
the must-have little round green Vietnamese metallic ornament
two interesting huge cylindrical modern glass buildings

Adjectives may be placed in different positions in relation to the nouns being modified. Adjectives placed before the nouns are called attributive adjectives.

Examples:

vast ocean

great mountains

Adjectives found after the linking verb are called predicative adjectives.

Examples:

The warriors are exhausted.

They appear weak.

Adjectives which follow the nouns they modify are called postpositive adjectives.

Examples:

God almighty

words unspoken

poet laureate
