Position of Adverbs

As a general rule, shorter adverbial phrases come before longer ones.

Adverbs are categorized into and are placed in sentences based on the following:

  1. Manner

Adverbs of manner express how something happens. They are usually placed either after the main verb or after the object.

    Examples:

    1. When the youngest brother was about to reach for the pomegranate, a new one appeared suddenly.
    2. The youngest brother examined the pomegranate happily.

Adverbs of manner must also be placed either before the verb or at the end of the clause.

    Examples:

    1. The youngest brother examined the pomegranate.
    2. When the brothers met again after ten years, they showed each other the unusual objects they had brought back from their journeys.
  2. Place

Adverbs of place tell where something happens or happened. Like adverbs of manner, adverbs of place are usually found after the main verb or after the object.

    Examples:

    1. The youngest brother went south.
    2. The second brother flew his carpet anywhere.
  3. Time

Adverbs of time convey when an action happens or happened. These adverbs are commonly placed at the end of a sentence, but they may also come at the beginning.

    Examples:

    1. The youngest brother walked in a grove of trees daily.
    2. Soon, the princess sat up in her bed, fully restored to health.
