Inner Planets
Earth
The planet Earth got its name from the old English word eorthe, which means ―ground. It is the only planet not named after a Roman mythological god or goddess. Earth is the third planet from the sun.
Earth is the only planet known to support life. It means living creatures like humans, animals, and plants are found on Earth because of its features that include its blue waters and brown and green land masses. Earth has big and small bodies of water that all living things need. Plants can grow on land and produce food.
The Earth is made up of three parts--the crust, mantle, and core. The crust is very thin, which is about 20 km thick. The mantle is thicker and denser than the crust. It is mainly made of rocks. The core, the innermost layer, is made of iron and nickel. The outer core is a liquid metal, which gives Earth its magnetic field. Thus, Earth is considered a big magnet.
