Types of Mixtures

The mixtures that you encounter in your daily life can be classified into different types, namely, solutions, suspensions, and colloids.

Solutions
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two substances, one of which is usually a liquid. One example is salt solution, which is prepared by adding salt to water. Upon mixing, the particles of salt eventually dissolve in water. This means that the salt is no longer visible but is still in the water.

In a salt solution, salt is the solute, or the substance being dissolved, while water is the solvent, or the substance that dissolves the solute. Other examples of solutions can be found at home. Sweet-and-sour sauce is a mixture of sugar, vinegar, water, and salt. Sugar and salt are the solutes, while vinegar and water are the solvents.
