Features of the Moon
The moon's surface is covered by features that are recognizable from a telescope on Earth. These include maria, craters, and highlands.
Maria
Maria or mares (plural form of mare) are large, dark, and flat areas formed from huge lava flows about three billion years ago.
Craters
Craters are large round pits from the impact of meteorites that hit the moon. A meteorite is a chunk of rock or dust from space.
