The Weather on Earth

Wind

During daytime the sun’s heat is absorbed by the sea and land, with land absorbing heat faster. During nighttime the land cools quickly while the sea becomes relatively hotter. The differences in the temperature of the land and sea cause or produce wind. The monsoon is a kind of seasonal wind that brings cold temperature with it.

It is very important to know where wind is coming from because wind direction indicates the kind of weather that will be experienced in a place. Wind coming from the northeast brings the northeast monsoon and cold weather while that coming from the southwest brings the southwest monsoon and rainy weather.

The direction and speed of wind can be located and measured using such instruments as the wind vane and anemometer.

The wind vane is a device that is used to tell the direction of the wind. It is usually in the form of an arrow, with the arrowhead pointing in the direction from which the wind is blowing. Thus, if the arrowhead is pointing to the east, this indicates that the wind is coming from the east.

The anemometer is an instrument used to measure the speed of wind. It is made up of cups that catch the wind and spin around, indicating how fast the wind is moving. When the wind blows hard, the cups of the anemometer move faster.
