The Magnetic Field

Study the image and notice how the magnet attracts the iron filings to its poles.

Iron filings are very small, almost powdery, slivers of iron that are used to show the direction of the magnetic field. Take note of the “formation” of the filings around the poles. This depicts the magnetic field that surrounds a magnet. A magnetic object that is within this field will be drawn to the magnet.
