Force

Change in Shape

Force can also change the shape of an object. When you pull on something, you force the object to move or to change its shape and size.

Try to stretch a rubber band. As you do so, you exert force on it and the band elongates, changing its shape.

If you have ever used a dishwashing sponge, what did you notice about its shape as you squeezed it? When you squeeze on a sponge, you exert force and this results in some change in its shape, though momentarily. The moment you remove the force and relax your hold on the sponge, it springs back to its original shape.
