Definition of Events

Complement of an Event

The complement of an event A is the set of all the elements in the sample space S that are not in the event A. The complement of A is denoted by A c .

Example

Suppose you tossed a die. Let A be the event of obtaining a number less than 3. Determine the complement of A.

Solution

The sample space S is given by S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}. Since A = {1, 2}, then A c = {3, 4, 5, 6}.
