A visual approach in arriving at a rule or conjecture for this pattern is to arrange the dots in a triangular pattern, as what you have done in step 3 of the previous activity. The numbers in the pattern are called triangular numbers.

You may also arrange the dots following a right triangle pattern that is half of a rectangle. Thus, the number of dots is half of a rectangular number.
