Applications of Linear Functions

Using the equation that you obtained in the previous page, 5x+y=2000, it is easy to determine the number of sacks of rice that can be sold at a given price. Suppose a sack of rice will be sold at ₱1600, how many sacks of rice can be sold?

Since y represents the price per sack of rice, let y=1600 and solve for x.

5x+y = 2000 Given
5x+1600 = 2000 Substitute 1600 for y.
5x = 20001600 Subtract 1600 from both sides.
5x = 400 Simplify.
x = 400 5 Divide both sides by 5.
x = 80 Simplify.

Thus, if a sack of rice can be sold at ₱1600, then 80 sacks of rice can be sold.
