Increasing and Decreasing Functions

A function is increasing if its graph rises from left to right. Observe that the trend is increasing for lines with positive slopes. Note also that a function is increasing if for any points ( x 1 , y 1 ) and ( x 2 , y 2 ) in the interval, y 1 < y 2 whenever x 1 < x 2 . The graph of a line shown in the figure below is an example of an increasing linear function.

The linear function   f(x)=2x3 given in the previous section is also an increasing function. Its graph rises from left to right. Below is the graph of such function.
