Increasing and Decreasing Functions

A function is decreasing if its graph falls from left to right. Observe that the trend is decreasing for lines with negative slopes. Note also that a function is decreasing if for any two points ( x 1 , y 1 ) and ( x 2 , y 2 ) in the interval, y 1 > y 2 whenever x 1 < x 2 . Refer to the figure below.

Consider the linear function y=3x+1. Refer to the figure below. Since its slope is negative, its graph falls from left to right.
