Simple Past Tense

  1. To refer to an action completed regardless of how recent or distant in the past

    Examples:

    1. The man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky, and all the wild animals.
    2. For Adam, no suitable helper was found.
  2. For an action done repeatedly, habitually, or at regular times in the past

    Examples:

    1. At Sunday school, the children listened to the story of creation.
    2. The teacher always included the story of creation in her Sunday school activities.
  3. For a state in the past

    Examples:

    1. Adam and Eve felt afraid when they heard the Lord call.
    2. The fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye.
  4. For a short event or action that comes or follows one after the other

    Examples:

    1. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
    2. The man and his wife heard the Lord and they hid from him among the trees in the garden.
  5. To place emphasis on what you say, especially in response to some remark.

    Examples:

    1. God did say, “You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.”
    2. The woman did give the man an apple to eat.
