Simple Past Tense

From your previous studies of verbs, you have already learned that verbs have tenses which indicate the time when an action or a condition happened. The word tense comes from the Latin word tempus which means “time.”

For this lesson, you will go over your lessons on simple past tense. This tense is used in the following:

  1. For events that started or happened and were completed in the past and have no relation with the present

    Examples:

    1. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
    2. God separated the light from the darkness.
  2. To describe an action that occurred in the past or at a specified time or time is easily understood or already implied

    Examples:

    1. On the seventh day God rested from all his work.
    2. God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.
  3. For an action that began and ended in the past

    Examples:

    1. God created the world in seven days.
    2. So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground.
