The Large Intestine

The large intestine is about 1.5 m to 1.8 m long and forms like an inverted U around the coils of the small intestine. From the small intestine, undigested food is passed to the large intestine where it is stored temporarily. In the large intestine, extra water is absorbed and solid waste or feces is transported to the rectum until it leaves the body through the anus.

Attached to the large intestine is a small finger-shaped sac of tissue called the appendix, which may play role in fighting infections.
