Soil Erosion
Mass Wasting
The downward movement of rocks, soil, and dirt caused by gravity is called mass wasting. There are three types of mass wasting: slump, creep, and rockslide.
Slump
A slump happens when materials or rock layers move slowly a short distance down a slope. The slump surface is usually spoon-shaped and concave upward or outward.
Creep
A creep occurs when rocks and soil move slowly down a gently sloping area. It causes fences and electrical posts to tilt and walls to be displaced.
Rockslide
A rockslide takes place when large masses of rocks break loose and slide down a high, steep slope. It is usually triggered by earthquakes and heavy rains.
