The Benefits and Effects of Weathering
Weathering is important in the production of soil. Loose soil is a product of continuous weathering which serves as a habitat for many plants and animals, and is commonly used for building houses, schools, and other establishments.
Weathering can also have harmful effects. Excessive weathering results in the loosening of rocks and soil such that they are easily removed and carried away by natural agents like water and wind. This process is called erosion.
Soil erosion can have disastrous effects on the environment, the most common of which is landslide. Landslide is the sliding of a mass of soil or rocks down an inclined area. The Philippines has experienced many landslides over the past years. These landslides have destroyed crops and properties and have killed numerous people. Environmentalists believe that the primary cause of these landslides is deforestation or the excessive clearing of forests to make way for infrastructure development and housing projects. After understanding the effects of weathering and soil erosion, we should help conserve soil and protect the environment.
