Static Electricity

Electricity can also be produced through contact between objects. This happens when two objects are rubbed together. Friction causes atoms to either gain or lose electrons. Thus, when objects come in contact with each other, electrons tend to move from one object to another.

When briskly combing your hair, some of the hair will cling to the comb. Rubbing your hands rapidly against a thick blanket and then touching someone else can cause a slight shock. Both instances demonstrate static electricity. Lightning is a form of static electricity, in which electrons flow through the air, producing a spark. In static electricity, the movement of charges is irregular.
