Common Disorders of the Reproductive System
Some women experience problems in their menstrual cycle until they reach menopause. Amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, and menorrhagia are some of these problems.
Amenorrhea
Amenorrhea is the absence of menstrual periods. It is caused by hormone imbalances or problems with the ovaries, vagina, or uterus. When amenorrhea is accompanied by irregular spotting or pain in the abdomen, the doctor should be consulted.
Dysmenorrhea
Dysmenorrhea is the medical term for menstrual pain. It manifests as pain in the lower abdomen, hips, lower back, and thighs that may be accompanied by diarrhea and headaches. It is common in women of ages 15 to 24.
Taking a warm bath and drinking plenty of fluids help relieve the discomfort caused by having dysmenorrhea.
Menorrhagia
Menorrhagia is prolonged or heavier-than-normal periods accompanied by pain. If left untreated, menorrhagia may lead to anemia.
Eating more iron rich foods, such as liver and green leafy vegetables, helps prevent loss of iron due to excessive bleeding.
