Soil is classified into three main types: sand, clay, and loam. These types differ according to their composition, texture, color, and water-holding capacity.
Sand
Sand is characterized by grains that are rougher and larger and have bigger gaps between them than those of the other soil types. Hence, it does not hold water well. It is light gray to white in color and is dry and gritty to the touch.
Because of its very poor water-holding capacity, sand lets nutrients easily drain away from it, making it less fertile. It is best used for areas requiring a lot of drainage such as baseball fields, although plants like carrots are able to survive on this soil. Sand mixed with cement is used in constructing various infrastructures and buildings.
