The Soil on Earth

Loam

Loam is the ideal soil for planting because of its high content of humus along with silt, sand, and clay. This soil type is soft, dry and crumbly, and dark in color. It holds water and nutrients very well even as it also drains easily. Its regular-sized grains allow air to pass through the soil particles down to the roots of plants. Most plants grow well on loam soil but among those that are highly productive are apples, beets, bell peppers, and cauliflower.
