A leaf is made up of different parts. Its tip is called apex. The petiole is the stalk that connects the leaf to the stem. The blade is the flat structure on each side of the middle main vein called the midrib. Leaves also have very small openings called stomata. The guard cells open and close the stomata, allowing the exchange of gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen to take place in a leaf.

Leaves differ in size, shape, and color. They can be small or big. They can vary from round to oval to heart-shaped. Most leaves are green due to chlorophyll, a pigment that is found in plant cells called chloroplast.

The arrangement of veins in a leaf is called venation. The veins are structures that serve as passageway of water and nutrients needed by the leaves. They also provide support to the leaves.
