Plants: Their Parts and Kinds

Parts of a Plant

Plants have different parts. Each part has a specific function.

The Roots

The roots are the parts of the plant that are buried in the soil from which they absorb water and minerals. They also hold the plant firmly to the ground.

There are two types of roots: taproots and fibrous roots.

A taproot has one large main root with smaller roots branching out. Sugar beet, carrot, and radish are examples of taproots.

A fibrous root is a network of slender roots, hence its fiberlike appearance. It has no main root. Rice, corn, grass, and onion have fibrous roots.

The Stem

The stem is the part that transports water and minerals from the roots to the other parts of the plant. It also holds the leaves, flowers, and fruits of the plant.

There are two types of stems: woody and herbaceous. Woody stems are hard and stiff, while herbaceous stems are soft and flexible. Examples of plants with woody stems are various kinds of trees.
