An ordered pair of numbers is called a solution to a linear inequality in two variables if the numbers satisfy the inequality.

Example

Determine if the ordered pair $(1, 3)$ is a solution of the linear inequality $2 x + y < 6.$

Solution

Substitute 1 for x and 3 for y in the inequality $2 x + y < 6.$ Check if the resulting inequality is true.

Since the resulting inequality is true, the ordered pair $(1, 3)$ is a solution of $2 x + y < 6.$
