Solutions to Linear Inequalities in Two Variables

An ordered pair of numbers is called a solution to a linear inequality in two variables if the numbers satisfy the inequality.

Example

Determine if the ordered pair (1,3) is a solution of the linear inequality 2x+y<6.

Solution

Substitute 1 for x and 3 for y in the inequality 2x+y<6. Check if the resulting inequality is true.

2(1)+3 <6
2+3 <6
5 <6 True

Since the resulting inequality is true, the ordered pair (1,3) is a solution of 2x+y<6.
