Types of Forces

When force is applied to objects, they move. They change directions or positions. There are two types of forces: contact and noncontact forces.

Contact Force
A contact force is a type of force that results from direct contact between two surfaces. Catching a ball, striking a match, scrubbing the floor, and hammering a nail involve contact forces. Friction is an example of contact force.

Noncontact Force
A noncontact force, on the other hand, is a force that does not involve direct contact between objects. This force acts at a distance. Gravity is an example of a noncontact force.
