Force and Motion

Kinds of Forces

Many things around you move but they can do this only because of force. When you close your lunchbox or press a button on your TV remote control, you exert a push on the lunchbox cover or on the button. When you open the door of your closet or take a book from a shelf, you exert a pull on the cabinet or book. The push or pull that you exert to make objects move in a certain way is called force.

There are different kinds of forces. These include gravity, the wind, flowing water, electricity, and magnetism.

Gravity

Gravity is a force that pulls objects toward the ground. This force is the reason why the leaves of trees fall off and why you fall back to the floor after jumping.

Wind

The wind is the force that makes kites fly and the leaves and branches of trees sway.
