Interior and Exterior Angles of Triangles

The triangular structures on bridges, buildings, and other architectural designs may look like a triangle with an extended side similar to the figure below.

The angles located inside a triangle are called interior angles. An angle located outside a triangle and formed by a side and an extension of an adjacent side is an exterior angle of the triangle. In the figure, ACD is an exterior angle of ΔABC. Angles A and B are called remote interior angles and ACB is called an adjacent interior angle in relation to ACD.

  • An exterior angle of a triangle is an angle adjacent and supplementary to one of its interior angles.
  • An adjacent interior angle of a triangle is an interior angle that forms a linear pair with the given exterior angle.
  • The remote interior angles of a triangle are angles that are not adjacent to its given exterior angle.
