Introduction

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is known to increase the body's resistance to infection. Refer to the following figures:

Assume that 3 medium bananas and 2 average-sized carrots provide 48 mg of vitamin C.

Assume that 2 medium bananas and 3 average-sized carrots provide 42 mg of vitamin C.

If the recommended daily dietary intake of vitamin C for adults is 60 milligrams (mg), will 4 medium bananas and 2 average-sized carrots a day provide the recommended daily intake?

The problem above can be translated into a system of two linear equations in two variables. In this lesson, you will study various methods of solving such systems, namely, the (a) graphical method, (b) substitution method, and (c) elimination method.
