Division of Rational Expressions

Recall that to divide 10 7 by 8 7 , you can multiply 10 7 by the reciprocal of 8 7 , which is 7 8 .

10 7 ÷ 8 7 = 10 7 7 8 = 10 8 = 5 4

The same procedure is done when dividing rational expressions. Hence, to divide a rational expression, multiply the first rational expression (the dividend) by the reciprocal of the second rational expression (the divisor). In symbols,

a b ÷ c d = a b d c = ad bc .
Example 1

Divide and then simplify if possible.

3 x 10 ÷ 6 7 y

Solution

Use the following rule: a b ÷ c d = a b d c = ad bc .

3 x 10 ÷ 6 7 y = 3 x 10 7 y 6
= 3 x 7 y 10 6
= 21 x y 60
= 7 x y 20
