Laws of Exponents

Consider the following expression, where b0:

( a b ) 3 = a b a b a b = a 3 b 3

Thus, ( a b ) 3 = a 3 b 3 . This example illustrates the following law of exponents:

Rule for a Quotient Raised to a Power
If a and b are real numbers, with b0, and if m is a positive integer, then

( a b ) m = a m b m .

This rule states that when raising a fraction to a power, you need to raise both the numerator and the denominator to that power.
