There are other rules to observe in sentence writing. In subject-verb agreement, the number of the subject (singular or plural) is not changed by words that come between the subject and the verb.
Examples
The woman with the basket of herbs looks like Mariang Makiling.
The black-haired woman in the white silken robe lives alone in the mountains.
Phrases such as together with, as well as, and along with are not the same as and. The phrase introduced by as well as or along with will modify the earlier word, but it does not compound the subjects (as the word and would do).
Examples
The grandmother, as well as her daughters, is very ill.
The grandmother and her daughters are very ill.
When parts of a subject are joined by or or nor, the verb agrees with the closer noun.
Examples
Neither Maria nor her other relatives were spared from evil deeds.
Either the old woman or the townspeople are allowed into Maria’s home.
