Interrogative and Demonstrative Pronouns

Interrogative pronouns are used to ask questions.

There are four main interrogative pronouns - who, whom, what, and which. The possessive pronoun whose can also be an interrogative pronoun.

Examples:

  • Who saw him?
- refers to a person used as a subject in a sentence
  • Whom did you give the letter to?
- refers to a person used as an object in a sentence
  • What did you buy?
- refers to a thing
  • Whose key did you find?
- refers to a person that shows possession
  • Which are the items you chose?
- refers to a person or a thing that has to be singled out from a number of choices

Remember not to confuse interrogative pronouns with relative pronouns.

An interrogative pronoun is used in order to ask a question. It has no antecedent.

Who came first in class?
Who has no antecedent.

A relative pronoun refers to an antecedent and begins an adjective clause.

Tina is the girl who came first in class.
The antecedent of who is girl.
