Appositives and Personal Pronouns

Read the following sentences:

  • Mr. Cruz goes to work every day. Mr. Cruz drives a small car. Mr. Cruz is a loving father to Mr. Cruz's children. Mr. Cruz is the president of the company that Mr. Cruz's family owns.

In the above sentences, the name Mr. Cruz has been repeated.

To avoid repetition, we can replace it with another word which will make the sentences sound better.

  • Mr. Cruz goes to work every day. He drives a small car. He is a loving father to his children. He is the president of the company that his family owns.

The words that have taken the place of Mr. Cruz are he and his. He and his are examples of personal pronouns.

A personal pronoun is a word that is used in place of a noun. It is used to avoid repetition.

Personal pronouns tell who the person is (first person), who the person spoken to is (second person), or who the person spoken about is (third person).

They also tell what thing, place, or animal is spoken about.
