Adverbs of Manner

Adverbs of manner describe how an action is done or how something happens. They usually end in -ly.

Examples: slowly, calmly, easily, safely

Other forms taken by adverbs of manner are the original form of the word.

Examples: fast, hard, straight, well

Adverbs of Time

Adverbs of time are words and phrases that tell when an action takes place.

Examples: Five seconds after the leader said "Go" and after the leader said "Stop"

There are also common one-word adverbs.

Examples: today, tomorrow, soon

Adverbs of Place

Adverbs of place are words or phrases that tell where an action takes place or in which direction an action is taken.

Examples: down, inside, upstairs, somewhere, to the right, to the teacher's table, and to the corner nearest the door

Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency are words and phrases that tell how often an action is done.

Examples:

  • sometimes
  • occasionally
  • rarely
  • never
  • three times
  • every month
  • hardly

Adverbs of Degree

Adverbs of degree are words that tell how much or to what degree of a quantity or quality a certain characteristic has.

Examples:

  • almost
  • entirely
  • completely
  • partially
  • nearly
