Organ and Organ Systems

The Human Organ System

Organ System Functions Major Organs
Muscular Allows movement and mobility as the muscles contract or relax; help provide heat to maintain normal body temperature; pushes food along the digestive tract; draws air into the lungs pumps and circulates blood skeletal muscles, smooth muscles, cardiac muscles
Nervous Controls most of the internal body processes; directs behavior and movement, relays nervous signals brain, spinal cord, nerves
Respiratory Allows gas exchange between the blood and the environment, by supplying oxygen to the blood and taking away carbon dioxide from the blood nose, trachea, bronchi, lungs
Reproductive Allows reproduction to happen—in the male: produces, maintains, and transports sperm cells male: testes, scrotum, penis, vas deferens; female: ovaries, uterus, vagina
Skeletal Gives the body support and shape; protects the internal organs; provides attachment points for muscles to allow movement; serves as site of production of new blood cells bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilages
