Introduction

Acids and bases are indispensable compounds because of their vital role in the daily lives of people. But what are acids? What are bases?

When an ant bites a termite, it makes a wound on the termite with its jaws then sprays an acid into the open wound. The acid causes the wound to sting or hurt because of the presence of formic acid in the wound.

If you have ever cooked or helped in the kitchen, you may have noticed how some pots and pans have scalelike deposits on their bottoms. These “scales” are deposits of calcium carbonate that have formed on the pots and pans from their long use. To remove these deposits, you can use acetic acid. Like all other acids, acetic acid reacts with calcium carbonate to eventually “descale” the pots and pans.
