Adverbs and Intensifiers

A common error in constructing sentences is the use of double negatives. Negative words are used to deny something or to say no. However, people sometimes use two negative words to emphasize negation.

Example:

Double negative:

People go through life without hardly knowing what they really want.

Correct:

People go through life without knowing what they really want.
Or
People go through life hardly knowing what they really want.

Double negatives can be corrected by using only one negative word to mean no and striking out the other. Another way is to change one negative word to a positive one.

Example:

Double negative:

Akaine didn't waste no time to hone her talents.

Correct:

Akaine didn't waste any time to hone her talents.
Or
Akaine wasted no time to hone her talents.
